Calm alternatives for sleep sounds

Calm is best known for meditation and Sleep Stories. If what you actually play every night is rain, a fan or brown noise, a sound-first app may fit better. Here are five options next to Calm, using only what each App Store listing says.

All competitor facts are from each app's US App Store listing as of October 30, 2026. "Paid options" are the in-app purchases each listing shows. Listings show several price points, so we give the range rather than guess which is monthly or yearly.

Where Calm is the stronger pick

Calm's biggest draw isn't its sound library. Its listing (as of October 30, 2026) features Sleep Stories read by well-known narrators, including Matthew McConaughey, Stephen Fry and Bob Ross, with 100+ exclusive stories, plus daily guided meditations, breathing exercises and multi-day mindfulness programs. If you fall asleep to a voice telling a story, or you use Calm's meditations during the day, none of the sound-first apps below replace that.

The case for an alternative is narrower: you open Calm, skip past everything else, and play the same rain or noise track every night. In that case you may be paying for content you don't use, and a sound-first app can give you more control over the sound itself.

Who should pick which

Want to hear sounds before you install anything? Use the free sleep sounds player, read about rain sounds and sleep music, or put on a long video such as soft rain for 3 hours or slow ocean swell at night, 8 hours. If you like guided sessions, our guided sleep meditation for overthinking is free on YouTube. The free 4-7-8 breathing pacer and the other free sleep tools need no app at all.

How we chose

We picked well-known iPhone apps that people use for sleep sounds, plus our own. For each we recorded the same facts from its US App Store listing and Apple's lookup data as of October 30, 2026: download price, the in-app purchases shown, minimum iOS version and the features the listing describes. We didn't test, score or rank the apps, and we left out ratings and user counts. iPhone's built-in Background Sounds (Balanced, Bright and Dark Noise plus ocean, rain and stream, per MacRumors; see also Apple Support) is also worth a try before you pay for anything.
