Free sleep sound apps for iPhone, compared

Most sleep sound apps are free to download, but 'free' means different things: a few sounds with ads, a full app with a one-time upgrade, or a trial before a subscription. Here are six well-known options side by side, using only what each App Store listing says.

How should you choose?

Start with what bothers you at night, then match it to how the app is sold.

Whatever you pick, keep the volume low. Our safe volume guide has the numbers, and if you'd rather not install anything, the all-night, screen-off guide covers the iPhone's built-in Background Sounds and our free browser player.

How we put this together

We chose well-known iPhone apps that focus on sleep sounds or sleep, each with a large number of App Store ratings, and added our own. It's not a complete list. On October 25, 2026 we opened each app's US App Store page and pulled its price, in-app purchases, ratings, minimum iOS version and latest version date from Apple's public lookup data. Descriptions in the second table are paraphrased from each listing, and anything in quotation marks is the listing's own wording.

We didn't test or score the apps against each other, and we don't make claims about any app beyond its listing. Prices, features and ratings change often, and in-app purchase prices can differ by country, so check the App Store before you buy. If you spot something out of date, the About page explains who runs this site.

Questions

Which free sleep sound app is best?

There isn't one answer, and we make one of the apps, so we don't rank them. Decide what matters most to you: a big free library, a one-time upgrade instead of a subscription, an app without ads, or extras like stories and meditations. Then try two or three for a few nights each.

Are these apps really free?

All six are free to download, according to the App Store. What you get for free differs. Some keep a full set of sounds free with a banner ad, some sell a one-time upgrade, and some keep most content behind a paid subscription with a free trial.

Do I need an app to play sleep sounds on iPhone?

No. iOS has built-in Background Sounds under Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual, with options such as rain, ocean and three noise colors. Apps add bigger libraries, mixing and timers.

How did you choose these apps?

We picked well-known iPhone apps focused on sleep sounds or sleep, with large numbers of App Store ratings, and added our own. It isn't a complete list, and leaving an app out doesn't mean it's worse.
