Misty night rain, 3 hours of soft open-air rain through fog

Rain with nothing between you and it: no roof to drum on, no window to tick against, just fine rain falling through slow, drifting night mist, a low breeze and the faint trickle of runoff somewhere close by. The picture fades to near-black between 2:00 and 5:00.

What it is

Most of our rain videos put you somewhere sheltered, under a skylight or behind a cabin window. This one is open air. Without a surface for drops to hit, the sound is softer and more diffuse, a fine hiss rather than a patter, with a low breeze moving through it and a quiet trickle of running water. Nothing crashes, sings or speaks. On screen, blue-grey haze drifts slowly with fine rain streaks over it, then dims from 2:00 to 5:00 until it is near-black, and the sound eases out at 2:59:00.

How to use it for sleep

Three hours covers the time it takes most people to fall asleep and the first, usually deepest part of the night, so it works well with a sleep timer or for naps that run long. On a TV, keep the volume just above a whisper and let the dark picture sit in the corner of the room. Our safe volume guide has tips on setting a level you can leave on, and our screen-off guide covers playing sounds all night without a bright screen.

Best for

People who like rain but find roof or window drops too busy, light sleepers who want a soft hiss to cover small noises, and evenings when you want the feeling of fog and cool air. If you want something closer and more textured, try soft rain or forest rain, both also three hours. Our rain sounds guide compares the different kinds, and rain sounds vs white noise explains how rain differs from plain noise.

Sound design note

Every sound here is generated by SleepBetter’s own audio engine, with no recorded samples, so there is no traffic, birdsong or voices hidden in it. The mix is kept steady and even on purpose, with no sudden bursts and no obvious loop, so it fades into the background instead of drawing your attention.

How this was made

Footage: real slow-motion stock video of drifting haze by Dan Cristian Pădureț on Pexels (Pexels License), slowed, tinted night-blue and looped by SleepBetter. The rain streaks are drawn in code. Audio: rain, breeze and trickle generated by SleepBetter’s own sound engine. No AI imagery and no voice.
