What You're Actually Measuring
Sleep quality has four measurable components:
- Sleep efficiency: Time asleep / time in bed. Below 85% suggests fragmentation or trouble falling asleep.
- Sleep stages: Time in deep sleep (N3) and REM. Together these should account for at least 40–45% of total sleep time.
- Sleep continuity: Number of awakenings and their duration.
- Sleep latency: Time from getting into bed to falling asleep.
Consumer tracking can capture all of these to varying degrees of accuracy.
Option 1: A Sleep Tracking App With Manual Logging
The simplest starting point requires no hardware. A sleep app lets you log your bedtime, wake time, and subjective quality each morning. Over two weeks, this data reveals patterns that aren't obvious day-to-day: whether your weekend schedule is disrupting weekday sleep, whether certain habits correlate with worse mornings, whether your total hours are consistently short.
The limitation: subjective logging doesn't tell you about sleep stages or fragmentation you weren't aware of. But it's a useful first layer, especially when you're testing habit changes.

Option 2: Apple Watch / iPhone Sleep Tracking
Apple's built-in sleep tracking (via the Health app and Sleep app) estimates time asleep, sleep stages, and heart rate. The Apple Watch Series 4 and later measures respiratory rate and heart rate variability — both useful signals. Stage accuracy (distinguishing deep sleep from light sleep) is consumer-grade, meaning it's useful for trends but not clinical-grade detail.

Option 3: Dedicated Sleep Wearables

WHOOP: Subscription-based band focused on recovery. Strong HRV and strain tracking. Sleep Coach suggests personalized sleep targets. Good for athletes.
Garmin: Most Garmin devices with optical heart rate track sleep stages, Body Battery, and Pulse Ox. Sleep score integrates with HRV status. Good if you're already a Garmin user.
Fitbit: Entry-level sleep tracking with Sleep Score, stage estimates, and benchmarks. Less accurate than Oura but much cheaper.
Option 4: Under-Mattress Sensors
Withings Sleep Analyzer and Eight Sleep Pod use radar/pressure sensing to track sleep stages without wearing anything. Useful if you find wristbands uncomfortable. Accuracy is slightly lower than wrist-worn optical sensors for stage detection.
The Most Useful Thing You Can Do With the Data
Track one variable at a time alongside your sleep metrics. Eliminate alcohol for 10 days and compare your deep sleep and REM data. Shift your caffeine cutoff to noon and compare again. Track bedtime consistency and its effect on sleep efficiency.
Sleep tracking data without behavior change is just numbers. The value is in connecting habits to outcomes over time.
What to Ignore
Sleep tracking can create "orthosomnia" — anxiety about sleep data that paradoxically worsens sleep. If you find yourself stressed by a low sleep score, step back. Use weekly averages, not nightly scores. Trends matter; single nights don't.
