Morning light becomes critical. As your circadian signal weakens with age, external light cues become more important. Address the bathroom issue. Nighttime urination (nocturia) is one of the most common sleep disruptors after 50. Reduce evening fluid intake, avoid alcohol and caffeine in the evening, and elevate your legs for 30 minutes before bed to help your body process fluids earlier.
Don't fall into the "I'm old now" trap. Many people accept bad sleep as an inevitable part of aging and stop trying to improve. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Your sleep needs don't decrease with age — you still need 7–8 hours. What changes is how hard you need to work for it.
When to See a Doctor
Sleep apnea risk increases significantly with age, and it's underdiagnosed. If you snore loudly, wake gasping, have morning headaches, or feel exhausted despite adequate time in bed, get a sleep study. Treatment (often CPAP) can be transformative.
Restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movements, and certain medications (blood pressure drugs, antidepressants, corticosteroids) can also disrupt sleep. If your sleep problems persist despite good habits, a medical evaluation is the right next step.
