Sleep anxiety is a specific form of anxiety where trying to sleep becomes the source of stress. You're not just anxious and unable to sleep — you're anxious because you might not sleep. Nearly 40% of Gen Z adults report this at least three times a week.
Why Sleep Anxiety Is Different
General anxiety can cause sleep problems. Sleep anxiety is self-referential — the worry is specifically about sleep itself. "What if I can't fall asleep?" becomes "If I don't sleep, tomorrow is ruined" becomes "It's been 20 minutes and I'm still awake." Your brain learns to associate bed with anxiety, creating conditioned arousal.
The Paradox of Sleep Effort
Sleep gets harder the more you try. Effort activates the sympathetic nervous system — the opposite of what sleep requires. Sleep anxiety sufferers try too hard: going to bed early, lying in bed for hours, avoiding activities that "might interfere."
How to Break the Cycle
Paradoxical intention. Try to stay awake instead. Lie in bed with eyes open and gently resist sleep. This removes performance pressure.
Stimulus control. If awake more than 15–20 minutes, get up. Do something boring in dim light. Return only when drowsy.
Decatastrophize. One bad night has minimal impact on next-day performance. The anxiety about sleep loss is usually worse than the sleep loss itself.
Scheduled worry time. 15 minutes in the early evening to write down worries and next steps. When they surface at bedtime, they've already been handled.
Box breathing. Inhale 4 seconds, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Five to six cycles activates the parasympathetic response.
When to Get Help
If sleep anxiety is persistent and impacts daily functioning, CBT-I directly addresses the thought patterns maintaining it. It's available through therapists, telehealth, and digital programs.
Track to Reduce Uncertainty
Tracking creates data that counters catastrophizing. After two weeks of logging, you'll see you sleep more than you think, bad nights are less frequent than they feel, and specific conditions reliably produce better sleep.
